Somewhere I got the
idea that I’d like to go see the Mayan ruins at Uxmal (oosh – MAHL).
Don’t ask me how or where that idea came from. I have no clue where I even
heard of it. I guess that makes me the typical American. Even though Uxmal
is comparable to Chichen Itza, most of us have never heard of it. I suppose
I discovered it on some late-night geek web-surfing session.
Anyway, having decided
to go to Uxmal, I set about to plan the logistics and the rest of the
itinerary.
Merida’, in the Yucatan peninsula,
is the closest city to Uxmal. I love Mexico, and I feel right at
home there, so I was excited to go to Merida’ – someplace where I
had never been. There are also several lesser sites of Mayan ruins
that can be visited on a day trip from Uxmal along the Ruta Puuc (Kabah,
Sayil, Labna), plus the caves at Lol Tun. OK, great! Celestun
and the wildlife refuge came up as a target of opportunity after I
arrived in Merida (can’t pass up the beach if I’m anywhere near
it). And, to round it out, I decided to return home via Mexico
City. Mexico City (or DF – for Distrito Federal) is an exciting
place, and the Aztec pyramids at Teotihuacan would be the perfect
finish to an interesting trip of old, crumbling buildings and
ancient graves! |
