Alaska Rail is a great scenic way to get from Anchorage to Denali.
Although it takes several hours more than driving, it's a pleasant ride.
It stops briefly at Talkeetna and then continues to Denali.
Actually, the train goes from Fairbanks to Anchorage, with another
service from Anchorage to Whittier. We only rode from Anchorage to
Denali (round trip).
We rode on the GoldStar Service. GoldStar is a two-story,
glass-domed car with great views of the scenery. It also has
an outdoor observation deck at the rear of the car, beverage service,
and of course, its own dining car. The ticketing, boarding, and
baggage handling were all orderly and efficient.
The car is accompanied by a tour narrator, who disburses interesting
tidbits of information throughout the voyage. Halfway between
Anchorage and Denali the train stops, the crew changes from the
northbound train to the southbound train (and vice versa) and that way
the crew all get to sleep at home every night. Clever, huh? |
